The forkballer led the NL in losses (21) as a rookie and was 21-45 in his first three seasons with the weak Braves. But he started 1931 with eight straight wins on his way to an 18-10 mark, and followed with several more strong seasons. He often pinch hit, and he led all pitchers in hitting with a .309 BA in 1933.
