A fine righthanded hitter and remarkable fielder for those gloveless days, Lyons ranks second among ML third basemen in putouts per game. His best seasons were 1887, when he hit a career-high .367 and set the ML record for putouts at third base (255); and 1890, when he hit .354, led the AA in slugging (.531), and led league third basemen in fielding.
