Oct 7, 1971 - The Angels fire manager Lefty Phillips following a stormy season. Del Rice takes over in 1972.
May 18, 1961 - Ryne Duren comes in for the Angels and notches 4 strikeouts in the 7th inning against the White Sox. He fans Minnie Minoso Roy Sievers J. C. Martin and Sammy Esposito to tie the ML record. One pitch eludes C Del Rice and results in the winning run. Chicago takes it 6-4.
Jun 3, 1955 - The Cards trade veteran C Del Rice to the Braves for OF Pete Whisenant and C Charlie White.
Apr 30, 1950 - At St. Louis the Cards Del Rice belts a HR in the bottom of the 13th to break up a pitching duel between the Cubs Johnny Schmitz and Harry Brecheen. The Cards win 1-0. Rice also has a double as Schmitz gives up just 4 hits and retires 20 batters in a row.
Jun 29, 1945 - Ben Chapman replaces Fred Fitzsimmons who resigns as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. The club recently lost a team-record 16 straight. Chapman was acquired as a pitcher from the Dodgers on June 15th but is better known as the Yankee outfielder and base-stealing star. Chapman will be the NL's first player-manager since Jimmy Wilson (1934-39) when he appears in three games. Fitzsimmons final game is a 9-1 loss to the Cards at Shibe Park. Del Rice has three hits three runs and three RBIs to pace the Birds.
