    Astros manager Cecil Cooper didn't want to talk about anything or anyone else Thursday night before raving about Wandy Rodriguez. "He's a good player," Cooper said when asked about second baseman David Newhan, "but let's talk about Wandy." Rodriguez pitched eight solid innings and tied a career high with nine strikeouts, leading the Houston Astros to a 7-2 victory over the Texas Rangers.

    Mixed news:New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter started against Tampa Bay Monday night, his first appearance since leaving a game on April 7 due to a strained left quadriceps muscle. The shortstop went 2-for-5 with two RBI as the Yankees edged Tampa Bay 8-7. However, reliever Joba Chamberlain left the team after his father collapsed at home in Nebraska, and the pitcher was placed on the bereavement list. Harlan Chamberlain was hospitalized Monday at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln. Hospital spokeswoman Jo Miller said the family requested no further information be released.

    Kazmir throws:Tampa Bay pitcher Scott Kazmir threw 25 pitches over two innings in an extended spring training game. It was the first game action for the Rays'ace since he went on the 15-day DL because of a left elbow strain. He felt discomfort while warming up on Feb. 26. The reigning AL strikeout champion is to make three minor league starts, including one for Class A Vero Beach on Friday.

    Big Papi returns:Off to the worst start of his career, Boston's David Ortiz was back in the starting lineup against the Cleveland Indians. He went 2-for-5 and raised his batting average to .104.

    Mariners make moves:Pitchers Arthur Rhodes and R.A. Dickey were brought up by Seattle, which optioned struggling reliever Eric O'Flaherty to Double-A West Tenn. Seattle also placed outfielder Mike Morse on the 15-day disabled list after he dislocated his left shoulder diving for a fly ball on Sunday. Dickey, a former Ranger, has made two starts with Triple A Tacoma, going 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA. In his last outing, Dickey carried a no-hit bid into the seventh.

    Astros call up Quintero:Catcher Humberto Quintero's contract was purchased by Houston after regular starter J.R. Towles was hit in the left hand by a pitch. Also, infielder David Newhan was designated for assignment.

    Good move:The 30 major league teams and the sport's league office will combine to sponsor a Jackie Robinson Foundation scholar for each club from 2009-11. The pledge of $1.2 million raises the foundation's support from MLB and its teams to more than $10 million since 1996, the commissioner's office said.
