    Damian Miller

Known as a superb defensive catcher, Miller's work with the tools of ignorance drew raves from Randy Johnson and led to his annointment as the Big Unit's personal backstop. Manager Bob Brenly openly campaigned for Miller to capture the 2001 Gold Glove Award, saying, "We don't talk about him enough for the job he's done handling this pitching staff, especially with the two guys at the top, playing every day, getting banged up." Miller also knew how to swing the lumber, never batting under .270 while with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Originally a draft choice of the Minnesota Twins, Miller broke in with them in 1997 at the advanced age of 28. His career received a much-needed jolt when the D-Backs selected him in the expansion draft prior to the 1998 campaign. Miller platooned with Kelly Stinnett as Arizona's catcher until mid-2000, when Brenly promoted him to full-time duty. (GL)
