King was a righthanded reliever who started only 21 of the 200 games in which he
appeared. He was the star of the Dodger bullpen in 1951, going 14-7 with six saves
and leading the NL in relief wins (13). King managed three major league teams: the
Giants in 1969-1970, the Braves in 1974-1975, and the Yankees in 1982. His best managerial
record was 90-72 with the Giants in 1969, good for second place in the AL West. After
his dismissal as Yankees manager, he remained part of owner
George Steinbrenner's
brain trust through the 1980s.
