    Clay Dalrymple

Remembered mainly for his strong-armed defense, Dalrymple actually won the Phillies' regular catching job in 1960 with his bat, pinch-hitting 12-for-42, with an overall batting average of .272. Not a power threat, though a lefthanded dead pull hitter, Dalrymple had his best hitting year in 1962 (.276, 11 homers, and 54 RBI). He led NL catchers in assists in 1963, '65 and '67, and set a league record with 99 consecutive errorless games (and 628 chances) during 1966 and 1967. Traded to the Orioles in 1969, Dalrymple suffered a broken ankle in 1970, hastening his retirement. (MC)
