Dubbed with the nickname accorded anyone with Indian ancestry, the half-Cherokee
was a successful reliever for the Tigers during the early 1930s, twice leading the
AL in relief wins (1932, 1935). His work helped Detroit to pennants in 1934 and '35.
He left the majors after 1938 and pitched six years of AAA ball before being recalled
by the Tigers for a brief wartime stint. (JK
