Aug 15, 1977 - In a 2-1 win over Kansas City Boston's Jim Rice hits a 3rd inning double and becomes the first Boston player since Ted Williams in 1939 to hit 20 homers 20 doubles and 10 triples in a season. Between Williams and Rice only Charlie Keller (1946) DiMaggio (1948 '50) Mantle (1955) and Minoso (1956) had reached those levels.
Sep 4, 1952 - The Yanks sign vet Charlie Keller for the remainder of the season but they don't need him today as they crush the A's 12-2. Gil McDougald has two homers and the Yanks chase Shantz with 7 runs in the 7th. The lefty was trying for his 23rd win. Chief Reynolds wins his 17th spoiling Chief Bender night at Shibe Park. The former A's ace receives a check for $6000 gifts and a scroll with 150000 names. On hand are former teammates Frank Baker Rube Oldring Lena Blackburne and Ira Thomas.
Dec 7, 1949 - After ten years in pinstripes‚ Charlie "King Kong" Keller is released by the Yankees. He'll sign for a season in Detroit.
May 13, 1947 - The Yankees pound the Browns 9-1 with Charlie Keller DiMaggio and Johnny Lindell combining for consecutive homers off starter Fred Sanford in the 6th inning.
Jul 11, 1945 - Aaron Robinson Yankees C returns from the military. Red Ruffing is back too and so are Hugh Mulcahy and Buddy Lewis. Charlie Keller will follow and a couple of dozen former ML players will be in uniform before the season is over.
Sep 27, 1941 - The Yankees tune-up for the World Series with a 4-3 loss to the Senators. Charlie Keller finally plays, going 0-for-4, while Joe Dimaggio has 2 RBIs to take the lead 123 to 122 over Keller. The Senators will shutout New York tomorrow, 5-0.
Sep 24, 1941 - The Yanks down the A's, 7-2, as Joe DiMaggio hits #29 and #30, the fifth year in a row he's reached the 30 mark. His three RBIs moves him close to idle Charlie Keller.
Sep 23, 1941 - A triple by Eddie Collins, Jr. triggers a two-run ninth inning rally as the A's beat the Yankees, 9-8. Red Ruffing takes the loss, despite hitting a homer, triple and single and driving in 3 runs. Four errors by NY, three by second baseman Joe Gordon, help the A’s. Joe Dimaggio homers and collects two RBI in his RBI race with idle Charlie Keller. Bill Dickey plays four innings to set a ML record of catching 100 games in each of 13 seasons, breaking the previous standard of 12 set by Gabby Hartnett and Ray Schalk.
Sep 1, 1941 - At Fenway the Red Sox sweep 2 from the Senators 13-9 and 10-3. Williams has only 5 official at bats but has 3 hits-all homers-to take over the AL lead from Charlie Keller. Ted walks 4 times.
Jun 29, 1941 - Joe DiMaggio lines a double against Washington knuckleballer Dutch Leonard in the 6th inning in the first game of a doubleheader to tie George Sisler's AL consecutive-game hit record of 41. In game 2 he collects a 7th-inning single off Red Anderson to set the record at 42 games. In the first game the Yankees notch a homer by Henrich and one from Charlie Keller in the nitecap the 25th straight game the Bombers have homered for a new ML record. New York sweeps winning 9-4 and 7-5.
Oct 8, 1939 - In the 10th inning of game 4 the Reds make 3 errors and watch in shock as the Yankees run wild scoring three runs The inning is climaxed by Joe DiMaggio's slide across the plate left unguarded by Ernie Lombardi who was stunned by a kick in the groin by the preceding runner Charlie Keller. The Yankees win 7-4 beating Walters for the 2nd time and sweep the Reds to win their 4th straight World Championship. Starter Paul Derringer guns down the first 14 Yankees to tie a WS mark set exactly two years ago. It will not be tied or topped this century.
Oct 7, 1939 - The Series resumes at Crosley Field and Yankee power proves too much for the Reds who collect ten singles. Bump Hadley pitches well enough in relief of Lefty Gomez to wrap up a 7-3 victory. Yankees OF Charlie Keller hits 2 HRs and DiMaggio and Dickey also connect. Junior Thompson is the loser.
Jan 10, 1938 - Before a gathering of writers‚ players and executives in Baltimore‚ Jimmie Foxx, representing the American League‚ National Leaguer Chuck Klein‚ and Charlie Keller, representing the International League, participate in an extended batting practice with new balls the major leagues plan to use in the upcoming season. Dick Thompson of The Sporting News reports, ". . . regarding the dead ball‚ as adopted by the National League‚ and the lively ball‚ as retained by the American and International Leagues . . .the NL ball has a distinctly 'dead' sound coming off the bat‚ compared to the livelier AL ball."
