MLB bests and worsts, who’s hot and who’s not:
American League
Best team:It doesn’t look as though the New York Yankees are going to get any competition in the AL East, but they still have something to shoot for. New York is in a heated race with the Los Angeles Angels for the best record in baseball. The Yankees entered their series against Boston with three more wins than the Angels.
Rising:Few teams do a better job of manufacturing runs than the Tampa Bay Rays. Entering Saturday’s games, Tampa Bay was fifth in the AL in batting average, and fourth in runs scored. The Rays’ ability to steal bases helps. The Rays have 38 more steals than their closest competitor. Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton have accounted for 89 of the steals.
Falling:It hasn’t been a real good month for the Toronto Blue Jays. First, they couldn’t trade Roy Halladay. Then, they went into the tank in the East. Halladay hasn’t been the same since the July 31 trade deadline. He’s 2-2, and has allowed 35 hits in 30 innings pitched.
Worst team:The offense in Kansas City has been wretched. The Royals have a chance to pull off the Triple Crown for offensive ineptitude. They entered Saturday with the worst batting average and fewest RBI in the AL and were next-to-last in homers. Oakland had four fewer homers.
National League
Best team:The Philadelphia Phillies have wrestled this spot away from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and their trade for Cliff Lee has a lot to do with that. Lee is having a CC Sabathia-like effect with the Phillies. He’s won all four of his starts with Philly and has allowed three earned runs.
Rising:The St. Louis Cardinals have had enough of the logjam in the Central, and have left the competition to fight it out for the wild card. The Cardinals won eight of 10 games to build the biggest lead in the Central. Albert Pujols, who will repeat at MVP, leads the league in homers and is second in RBI.
Falling:Shaking up the roster in Milwaukee didn’t exactly jump start the Brewers. Getting rid of Bill Hall and demoting J.J. Hardy hasn’t had the desired effect as Milwaukee entered the weekend 10 games behind St. Louis and four games under .500.
Worst team:The Washington Nationals are coming back to earth after playing .900 baseball for nearly two weeks. But they can take solace in that they’ve accomplished their No. 1 goal for the season— signing No. 1 pick Stephen Strasburg.
Who’s hot
OF Julio Borbon, Texas Rangers:Borbon is really making it tough for the Rangers to take it slow with him. From Aug. 15 until Thursday, Borbon made five starts and had 13 hits and seven stolen bases. He went into the Tampa Bay series carrying a .485 average.
Who’s not
RHP Joba Chamberlain, New York Yankees:Chamberlain allowed four runs in each of three consecutive starts, and put the bullpen in a bind by pitching 16 innings in those starts.

MLB best and worst teams, hot and not players:

    American League

Best team:The Toronto Blue Jays continue to get offensive production from unlikely sources. Second baseman Aaron Hill has a team-high eight home runs and 28 RBI. And light-hitting shortstop Marco Scutaro has shown surprising pop with five home runs and a team-high 31 runs.

Rising:The Ron Washington watch is over for the Texas Rangers. They ran off five consecutive victories, with three coming on the road, to move into first place in the West. Starting pitchers recorded victories in four of the games, and Vicente Padilla was dominant in his no-decision.

Falling:What happened to the starting pitching that was supposed to carry the Minnesota Twins? Kevin Slowey has four victories, but Francisco Liriano, Glen Perkins, Nick Blackburn and Scott Baker have combined for just five victories in 23 starts. That won’t get it done in a balanced Central.

Worst team:The Cleveland Indians continue to make news for all the wrong reasons. Thursday night the Tribe helped Boston tie a modern-day record as the Red Sox scored 12 runs in an inning before an out was recorded. The really bad news was that the Indians led 2-1 before that inning.

    National League

Best team:The Los Angeles Dodgers must prove they can win without Manny Ramirez. The first step didn’t go well as LA blew a six-run lead against Washington on Thursday and lost for the first time at home. The offense is good enough to overcome the loss of Ramirez, but there’s a lot of pressure on his replacement in left, light-hitting Juan Pierre.

Rising:The Chicago Cubs are already driving their fans crazy. They were bad at the end of April, but then won six of seven to start May. With Aramis Ramirez out, Chicago has to get Derrek Lee and Milton Bradley healthy and productive. Lee was hitting .209, which looks downright beautiful compared to Bradley(.143 after his first 20 games).

Falling:The feel-good start for the Pittsburgh Pirates went away with a five-game losing streak in which their pitching was fine but their offense was hideous. The streak started with a shutout, and Pittsburgh totaled just 13 runs in the five games.

Worst team:The Washington Nationals have had their highlight for the season. That came Thursday night when they rallied from a six-run deficit to hand the Dodgers their first home loss of the season.

    Who’s hot

Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Carl Crawford is doing his best Rickey Henderson impersonation. Crawford tied the record with six steals in a game last weekend against Boston and didn’t stop there. During a nine-game span, he stole 14 bases.

    Who’s not

Boston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett is suddenly very hittable. Beckett won his last start against the New York Yankees, but gave up 10 hits. That’s been par for the course for the Texan, who has surrendered 10 hits in each of his last three starts and has a 6.75 ERA.
