Giants manager
John McGraw traded away the aggressive Herzog three times. The second
trade, in 1913, came after Herzog played third base on three straight Giants pennant
winners and hit .400 in the 1912 WS. McGraw brought Herzog back a third time, and
in 1917, Herzog was on another New York pennant-winner, this time playing second
base. The much-traveled University of Maryland graduate found an appropriate second
career as the general athletic passenger agent for the B&O Railroad.
