Jul 22, 1959 - Veteran Bobby Avila in his first game with Milwaukee hits a 2-run 9th inning HR of the Reds' Jim O'Toole to help give the Braves a 5-4 win.
Dec 2, 1958 - The Indians send 2B Bobby Avila to the Orioles for P Russ Heman and cash.
Aug 2, 1956 - Herb Score shuts out the Yankees 4-0 for the Indians 7th shut out in their last 12 games. Bobby Avila gets the Tribe on board with an inside-the-park homer in the 3rd. Ward and Colavito go back-to-back in the 4th and one out later Chico Carrasquel homers. The 4 solo homers in a shutout win sets a ML record.
Sep 26, 1954 - The Indians lose their last game 8-7 in 13 innings to Detroit. Bobby Avila is 1-for-2 with a HR before being lifted and wins the batting title with a .341 average. Ted Williams batting 2nd in today's 11-2 win over Washington is 1-for-4 to finish at .344. Teddy Ballgame is 14 at bats short of qualifying for the title (adding the 14 in gives him a .333) but drew 136 walks in 117 games.
Sep 17, 1954 - Bob Lemon wins his 23rd game beating the Tigers 6-3 and ensuring the Indians at least a tie for the pennant. Bobby Avila breaks a 2-2 tie with a 7th inning grand slam.
Jul 19, 1951 - Despite a pair of homers by Clyde Vollmer the Indians edge the Red Sox 5-4 in 11 innings. Bobby Avila scores the winner from 1B on a single as Ted Williams holds the ball. Cleveland's win moves them 1 1/2 games in back of Boston.
Jun 20, 1951 - Cleveland IF Bobby Avila hits 3 HRs going 5-for-6 against the Red Sox. His 15 total bases will stand as a team record until surpassed by Rocky Colavito in l959. Before today Avila had hit just one homer against the Bosox. Cleveland outslugs Boston to win 14-8 as Early Wynn earns the complete game win.
Oct 8, 1909 - The Pirates winners of 110 games face Detroit in the WS which pits the 2 leagues' top offensive stars Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb. It is the first of three times that batting champs will face each other in the WS (Al Simmons and Chick Hafey in 1931: Bobby Avila and Willie Mays in 1954 are the others) Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke starts 27-year-old rookie righthander Babe Adams against Tigers P George Mullin. There are only 11 hits in the game but one is a HR by Clarke and the Pirates win 4-1 before a crowd of 29264.
