In 1958 rookie Schmidt won the Giants' catching job and a spot on the NL All-Star team with an early-season batting tear. He finished with 14 HR, led NL catchers in double plays, and set a since-broken record with 22 putouts in one game. After 1958, Schmidt was platooned. (MC)
