Bill Phillips from the Chronology
Apr 23, 1999 - The Cardinals defeat the Dodgers 12-5 as 3B Fernando Tatis sets a major league record by hitting 2 grand slams in a single inning. His 2 homers came in St. Louis' 11-run 3rd inning. He also sets a record with 8 RBIs in the inning while LA P Chan Ho Park becomes the 1st pitcher this century-and only the 2nd ever-to surrender 2 grand slams in a single frame. Bill Phillips of the Pirates did so in 1890. Park became the 36th major-leaguer to serve up two slams to the same player in his career.
Sep 14, 1902 - As noted by Gil Bogan Tinker Evers and Chance pull off their first DP in a 7-4 win over the Reds. Alex Hardy beats Bill Phillips. This date is one day earlier than that generally used for the trio's first DP.
Sep 10, 1902 - Billy Wolfe half brother of the Reds Bill Phillips makes his only ML appearance pitching for the Phillies. He loses to Pittsburgh and Jesse Tannehill 5-1.
May 17, 1902 - The Reds take one from the Giants defeating Christy Mathewson 6-1. Bill Phillips scatters 6 hits to win.
May 13, 1902 - The Reds roll over the visiting Phillies 24-2 with each of the 9 players in the lineup collecting at least 2 hits. Winning pitcher Bill Phillips has 4 as Cincinnati totals 28 hits. It is the highest score in the ML this year. Just 400 fans watch.
Jun 24, 1901 - After Cincy loses 8-0 in the opener of a twinbill the Reds Bill Phillips sets several records in game two as he gives up 19 runs and 22 hits at Philadelphia losing 19-1. In 8 innings he faces a record 55 batters with 49 official at bats-both NL records for the 20th century. Phils pitcher Doc White has 4 hits including an inside-the-park homer.
May 24, 1901 - At the Polo Grounds Christy Mathewson wins his 8th straight beating Cincinnati's Bill Phillips 1-0. Matty gives up just 3 hits.
Aug 17, 1900 - Reds pitcher Bill Phillips punches Phillies batter Roy Thomas after Thomas fouls off a dozen pitches in the 8th inning. Phillips is ejected but the Reds win in the 11th 5-4. Reportedly (as noted by Art Ahrens) Thomas fouled off 22 straight on another occasion. According to Bill James it is Thomas and John McGraw who are chiefly responsible for the NL adopting the foul strike rule next year.
Sep 9, 1899 - Jake Beckley of Cincinnati hits a grand slam inside-the-park HR in a 12-6 loss to St. Louis. In the same game Bill Phillips quick-pitches a perfect strike to Burkett who had stepped out of the batter's box. True to his nickname of "The Crab" Jesse shows his irritation and is ejected. Emmet Heidrick has 4 singles and scores 3 times for St. Louis.
Aug 16, 1890 - It's a bad day for Pittsburgh's Bill Phillips as he becomes the first pitcher in ML history to give up 2 grand slams in one inning. Tommy Burns and Malachi Kittredge each hit one as Chicago scores 13 runs in the 5th inning en route a an 18-5 victory at Chicago's West Side Park. Chan Ho Park will tee up two slams to Fernando Tatis in 1999 to match Phillips. It is the second time this season that Chicago has scored 13 runs in an inning.
Jun 12, 1880 - John Lee Richmond pitches the first perfect game in professional history leading Worcester to a 1-0 victory over Cleveland. RF Lon Knight saves the no-hitter by throwing out Bill Phillips at 1B for a 9-3 putout.
