Sometimes identified as the first catcher to wear a glove in a game (against Harvard
in 1875), McGunnigle became a pitcher and then an outfielder in the NL. As a manager,
he used a tin whistle to signal his men. He compiled a unique record, winning pennants
in two consecutive years (1889-90) in two different leagues (AA and NL) with the
same team, Brooklyn.
