A baseball writer in New York for 42 years, Hanna graduated from Lafayette in 1878 and began his career with the Kansas City Star. In 1888, he moved to New York with the Herald, spent many years with the Sun, and then returned to the Herald in 1920. One of the best-informed writers of his time, Hanna disliked slang and jargon. He wrote in simple, terse, but well-chosen and informative phrases, and helped make sportswriting a respected profession. (NLM)
