    Bill Guthrie

Guthrie was one of the few umpires to work in both the National and American Leagues before the distinctions between the circuits were blurred at the turn of the 21st century. On the last day of the 1928 season, Goose Goslin, knowing he could lock up the AL batting title by avoiding his final at-bat, attempted to get himself thrown out of the game by constantly arguing Guthrie's calls. The umpire understood Goslin's intent and refused to be ruffled. The frustrated Goslin swung away and got a hit. (RTM)
