Mariners lineup: A few surprises: Ken Griffey Jr. is starting today -- at cleanup again -- against a lefty, Barry Zito. Don Wakamatsu had a couple of reasons -- one, they're facing two lefties the first two day in Oakland, so he didn't want Junior sitting three days in a row; and two, Zito's recent numbers against lefties aren't impressive. I still wish he had started Griffey against Randy Johnson, just for the theater.

3-Dot Lounge: Zito and his mentor should work down on the farm: No way. That's the initial, logical reaction to a Barry Zito-Rick Peterson reunion. By taking it all in stride, pitchers might get a leg up:
Former Rangers pitching coach Tom House used to think throwing a football made you a better pitcher.
Former Cy Young Award winner Mike Marshall believes throwing more, lifting weights and eliminating extra motion in the delivery can make pitchers better. And then there’s Bob Pritchard, president of San Francisco-based Somax Sports. Pritchard believes the difference between success and failure for a pitcher has everything to do with stride angles."A pitcher has to know how to throw and stuff,"said Pritchard, who has worked with 44 Olympic gold medalists."But a big stride angle enables you to generate force with your lower body. The power comes from the lower body."The stride angle is the maximum opening between the legs a pitcher uses when he’s striding toward the plate. And before you dismiss Pritchard, he has numbers that back him up.San Francisco pitcher Barry Zito, who has been a huge bust since he signed with the Giants before the 2007 season, has a stride angle of 78 degrees. That’s the smallest stride angle on the team. Giants ace Tim Lincecum’s stride angle is 115.Hall of Fame pitchers Nolan Ryan (120), Satchel Paige (125), Sandy Koufax (125), Tom Seaver (135) and Juan Marichal (168) are also examples of pitchers who had huge stride angles. That comes as no surprise to Pritchard.Pritchard believes that good pitching depends on the lower body, and the more flexible a pitcher is, the bigger his stride angle. That allows him to have more power behind his pitches. That holds true for Zito, who is 68-70 since his Cy Young season of 2002.The struggles don’t surprise Pritchard."The reason Barry is having a problem is he’s used to pitching with his arm, and it’s just gotten stiffer and developed microfibers,"Pritchard said."The reason I did this is Barry is struggling with his pitching, and I wanted to know why. I am a sports engineer, and it’s my business to analyze sports motion."He believes the stride angle is the reason the New York Yankees pitching staff has struggled. He takes it one step further, saying a smaller stride angle in the last year led to the arm injury for Yankees rookie pitcher Ian Kennedy. Kennedy’s stride angle last year was 95. It was 83 before he got hurt. While Pritchard has numbers to back his claims, he doesn’t have any major league clients. He’s worked with numerous college baseball players, but no major leaguers. He thinks there’s a reason for that."It makes sense to everybody but those in baseball,"Pritchard said."When I show it to someone in baseball, they are of the belief that pitchers throw with their arms. They pay inflated prices for pitchers with smaller stride angles and wonder why they don’t throw better."So the next time a team is thinking about shelling out big bucks for a free-agent pitcher, maybe it should check out his stride angle.Home is no place for Giants and Zito: What's more embarrassing, 2-11 or 14-24? Barry Zito's season record or the Giants' home record? Actually, they're intertwined. One-third of the Giants' home losses have come on Zito's watch. They lost all eight of his home starts, and he's 0-7 with a 7.34 ERA...

Reuniting Zito with old coach makes sense: Rick Peterson was Barry Zito's pitching coach through the pitcher's best years in Oakland. Now that Peterson is unemployed, would it not make sense for the Giants to hire him as a special instructor to work with Zito and help right him? There were indications...

Less velocity means more control for Cain: Lost amid the chatter of Barry Zito's drop in velocity has been a noticeable decline in Matt Cain's, but for Cain that is not necessarily bad. What I meant is both Dusty and I want to win, especially being in the Central Division, and we think it's possible."Long time coming:Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo recorded his first victory since Sept. 12 in a 4-3 win over St. Louis. Santana cuts off talks with Twins: The Twins may be fighting a losing battle in their efforts to extend Johan Santana's four-year, $40 million contract, which expires at the end of next season. A league source told SI that Minnesota recently offered to add two years to the deal, at around $18 million per season, plus a club option for 2011. That offer, however, falls well short of the seven-year, $126 million figure that Barry Zito received from the Giants this winter and virtually assures that Santana, the Koufax of his generation, will be the hottest free agent in the class of '08. Having set this past Opening Day as his deadline for securing a new deal, Santana has told the Twins that he won't negotiate again until he hits the open market -- when, it should be added, he will only be 29.

A REAL SWITCH HAUNT: Above Aaron Rowand's locker, he has placed the baseball card of Braves ace John Smoltz, not Giants ace Barry Zito. He's not even thinking about Zito, or opening the 2007 season by the Bay.
