    Jul 28, 1985 - Lou BrockEnos SlaughterArky Vaughan‚ and Hoyt Wilhelm are inducted into the Hall of Fame in a ceremony in Cooperstown‚ New York.

    Mar 6, 1985 - Enos Slaughter and Arky Vaughan are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Special Veterans Committee.

    Aug 31, 1952 - Former player Arky Vaughan‚ 40‚ and a friend drown when their boat overturns in a "bottomless" lake in California.

    Jul 10, 1943 - Today's Dodger game is almost anticlimactic to a pregame attempted strike by the players following Leo Durocher's 3-game suspension of P Bobo Newsom‚ the team's leading pitcher with 9 wins‚ for insubordination. Minutes before the game‚ SS Arky Vaughan handed his uniform to Durocher and refused to play. Durocher called for volunteers to play‚ but by game time he had just a battery of Curt Davis and Bobby Bragan. Branch Rickey intervened‚ and Vaughan and the others agreed to play. Vaughan and Durocher will never make up and Vaughan will sit out the next 3 seasons‚ ostensibly to help the war effort by farming‚ rather than play for The Lip. Only with Durocher's suspension in 1947 will the future Hall of Famer return to the Dodgers. Newsom‚ 9-4‚ will be traded to the Browns on July 15th. When the game‚ designated "Kitchen Fat Day" to allow women a free ticket if they bring one pound of fat to the game (5‚002 pounds of fat are collected for the war effort) finally starts‚ the Dodgers wallop the Pirates 23-6‚ scoring the most runs they will in a game the rest of this century. Only twice in team history have they scored more: 25‚ on May 20‚ 1896 and September 23‚ 1901.

    May 31, 1942 - In game 1 of a twinbill sweep at Brooklyn‚ Dixie Walker of the Dodgers is credited with an inside-the-park grand slam as the Braves aging Paul Waner searches for the ball under the bullpen bench. Walker follows Pee Wee ReesePete Reiser‚ and Arky Vaughan over the plate. The Dodgers win‚ 10-2. Brooklyn wins the nitecap‚ 3-1‚ behind Whit Wyatt's 10th straight win over Boston.

    Dec 11, 1941 - .12th The Pirates send All-Star SS Arky Vaughan to Brooklyn for P Luke Hamlin C Babe Phelps OF Jimmy Wasdell and 2B Pete Coscarart.

    Jul 8, 1941 - At the All-Star Game at Briggs Stadium‚ Ted Williams‚ hitting .405 at the break‚ homers off Chicago Cubs P Claude Passeau with two out and 2 on in the 9th inning to give the AL a dramatic 7-5 victory. Williams' 4 RBIs are matched by NL SS Arky Vaughan‚ who hits HRs in the 7th and 8th. Vaughan is the first player to homer twice in the classic.

    Sep 7, 1940 - Pittsburgh rallies to score 8 runs in the 8th and 3 more in the 9th to beat the Cardinals‚ 14-9. Three homers were hit‚ by Arky VaughanTerry Moore‚ and Vince DiMaggio.

    Jul 19, 1939 - Arky Vaughan hits for the cycle to pace the Pirates to a 10-2 win over the Giants.

    Sep 8, 1937 - The Pirates score a run in the 9th to beat the Reds‚ 1-0. Bucs pitcher Ed Brandt wins‚ handing the Reds their 30th one-run loss of the year. Arky Vaughan's triple and a single shoot down Gene Schott.

    May 13, 1937 - Carl Hubbell wins his 5th straight‚ and 21st over 2 seasons‚ stopping the NL-leading Pirates‚ 5-2. Arky Vaughan's two homers account for all the Pittsburgh scoring. Leading off‚ Dick Bartell hits his 4th homer in five days to continue his 12-game hitting streak‚ as the Giants hand reliever Waite Hoyt the loss.

    Jun 10, 1935 - Paul WanerArky Vaughan‚ and Pep Young hit successive HRs in the 8th inning off Benny Frey in the Pirates 14-1 win against the Reds. Vaughan's homer is his 2nd of the day as he continues to lead the N.L. in hitting with a .400+ average.

    Jun 24, 1933 - Arky Vaughan hits for the cycle‚ as the Pirates beat the Dodgers 15-3.

    May 1, 1933 - Earl Grace and Arky Vaughan slug grand slams for the Pirates and Bill Swift coasts to a 10-0 win over the Phillies.

    Aug 11, 1932 - Following a rainout of yesterday's Cubs-Giants game‚ rookie SS Arky Vaughan makes a crucial error in the 10th inning‚ and the Cubs top the Pirates 3-2 to retake first place.
